In the contemporary art world, exhibitions are often remembered as polished and complete outcomes—presented within pristine spaces, illuminated by carefully calibrated spotlights, where artworks rest quietly and elegantly upon white walls. Yet behind this composed façade lies the true pulse of the creative industry, concealed behind the closed doors of gallery storage facilities: spaces of movement, transformation, logistics, and perpetual change.
At a moment when contemporary art is filled with an ever-expanding range of questions and perspectives, Joyman Gallery offers its own response by stepping beyond conventional exhibition formats. Through the conceptual exhibition IN TRANSIT: An Open Depot Exhibition, the gallery invites visitors to encounter the realities of art handling, storage, and circulation by revealing what is normally kept behind the scenes.
แม้คำว่า “IN TRANSIT” ในแวดวงศิลปะมักถูกใช้ระบุสถานะทางกายภาพของการขนส่งโลจิสติกส์ หากแต่ในนิทรรศการครั้งนี้ คำดังกล่าวต้องการสื่อนัยลึกซึ้งถึง ‘สภาวะก้ำกึ่ง’ อันเป็นช่วงเวลารอยต่อที่พื้นที่และวัตถุจัดแสดงกำลังเคลื่อนผ่านจากสถานะหนึ่งไปสู่อีกสถานะหนึ่ง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นงานศิลปะในคลังที่กำลังเดินทาง การรอคอยการถูกค้นพบ หรือการสร้างบทสนทนาครั้งใหม่
แนวคิด Open Storage หรือ Open Depot ไม่ใช่เรื่องใหม่ในวงการศิลปะสากล มิวเซียมและสถาบันศิลปะชั้นนำหลายแห่งต่างทลายกำแพงห้องคลังเพื่อลดระยะห่างระหว่างผู้เข้าชมกับงานสะสม ทว่าการนำแนวคิดนี้มาใช้ในพื้นที่แกลเลอรี ได้ช่วยตอกย้ำการเข้าถึงศิลปะยุคใหม่ที่เน้น ‘ความจริงที่จับต้องได้’
While the term “in transit” is commonly used within the art world to describe the physical movement of artworks through logistical networks, this exhibition expands its meaning to encompass a broader condition of transition—a liminal state in which objects, spaces, and narratives move from one stage to another. Here, artworks exist between destinations: awaiting discovery, preparing for departure, or entering into new conversations with future audiences.
The concept of Open Storage or Open Depot is not new within international museum practice. Many leading museums and cultural institutions have opened their storage facilities to reduce the distance between visitors and their collections. Reimagined within the context of a commercial gallery, however, this approach emphasizes a different form of accessibility—one grounded in transparency and tangible reality.
โดยผู้ชมจะได้เปลี่ยนจากประสบการณ์ที่เคยพบงานศิลปะที่คัดสรรโดยภัณฑารักษ์ เปลี่ยนผ่านไปสู่การเผชิญหน้ากับ ‘ปริมาณ’ และ ‘มวลสสาร’ ของงานศิลปะร่วมสมัยหลากชิ้นจากศิลปินหลากรุ่น ซึ่งผ่านกระบวนการทำรหัสภาพและวางพิงซ้อนกันตามแผนผังคลังสินค้าจริง ท่ามกลางบรรยากาศพื้นที่กึ่งสตูดิโอและห้องปฏิบัติการที่เต็มไปด้วยอุปกรณ์ทำงาน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นโต๊ะทำงานยาว ไฟสเปกตรัมสำหรับถ่ายภาพสต็อก บันไดอะลูมิเนียม หรือรถเข็นภาพ โดยงานบางชิ้นยังคงจัดแสดงพร้อมพลาสติกกันกระแทกที่ห่อไว้ครึ่งๆ กลางๆ
นิทรรศการนี้จึงเป็นการจับสัจธรรมในช่วงเวลาสำคัญของการบริหารจัดการคลังร่วมกับพื้นที่มาขยายความ โดยเปลี่ยนกระบวนการหลังบ้านที่เต็มไปด้วยเอกสาร คราบฝุ่น และระบบการจัดเก็บ ให้กลายเป็นเนื้อหาหลักและงานศิลปะจัดวางในตัวเอง ผ่านการเปิดให้เห็นขั้นตอนการคัดแยก ตรวจเช็กสภาพงาน และคีย์ข้อมูลเข้าระบบดิจิทัลของทีมงาน เสมือนเป็นงานศิลปะแสดงสด (Performance Art) ที่ดำเนินไปตามวิถีชีวิตจริงทุกวัน พร้อมทั้งมอบเอกสิทธิ์ให้ผู้ชมได้สวมถุงมือและชุดทำงานเพื่อเดินชม เลือกขยับเปิดดูรายละเอียด ตลอดจนทดลองแขวนงานและถ่ายภาพเพื่อเข้าถึงศิลปะได้อย่างเป็นกันเองที่สุด ซึ่งกระบวนการทั้งหมดนี้คือสุนทรียศาสตร์รูปแบบใหม่ที่ประกาศว่า ศิลปะมีคุณค่าในทุกสภาวะ ไม่ใช่แค่ตอนที่อยู่บนผนังสีขาวเท่านั้น
Visitors are invited to move beyond the curated experience of viewing selected masterpieces and instead encounter the sheer volume and material presence of contemporary artworks by artists from multiple generations. Organized according to actual storage protocols, the works are coded, catalogued, stacked, and leaned against one another as they would be in a functioning depot. Surrounding them are the everyday tools of gallery operations: long worktables, photographic lighting systems, aluminum ladders, art carts, packing materials, and partially wrapped artworks still protected by layers of bubble wrap.
The exhibition transforms a critical moment in collection management into its primary subject matter. Administrative processes, storage systems, inventory records, dust, labels, and maintenance routines become integral components of the exhibition itself. Visitors may observe gallery staff as they inspect artworks, document conditions, update databases, and perform daily operational tasks—activities presented as a form of ongoing live performance, unfolding naturally as part of the gallery’s everyday life.
To further dissolve traditional boundaries, visitors are invited to wear gloves and work attire, examine artworks more closely, move selected pieces, experiment with temporary installations, and photograph them from their own perspectives. Through these participatory encounters, the exhibition proposes a new form of aesthetics—one that recognizes the value of art in every condition, not only when it is perfectly displayed on a white wall.

Visitors are no longer merely spectators; they become active participants within an ecosystem of movement, exchange, and care—sharing in the rhythms, realities, and living pulse of a contemporary gallery.
